The Red Sox initially wanted Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza to be included as compensation for general manager Theo Epstein, according to major league sources.
Chicago refused to include the right-hander.
Talks regarding compensation began a week ago, after Epstein and the Cubs agreed in principle to a five-year deal worth between $15 million-$20 million.
Recently the teams have been discussing minor leaguers as compensation, according to the sources.
In addition to the compensation, another holdup in talks has been which executives Epstein will be allowed to take with him to the Cubs.
