With a limited payroll and needs to be filled, the Reds will be forced to decide whether or not they should trade Joey Votto or Yonder Alonso. Both Votto and Alonso are left-handed hitting first baseman. Cincinnati has tried to deal with the problem by moving Alonso to left field. "Well, I hope so," general manager Walt Jocketty said when asked if the move will fix things. "We've got to continue to get Alonso more playing time, so he's more comfortable in left field." The Reds believe Alonso will develop into an elite hitter, but his foot speed will likely keep him from being even an average outfielder. Because of that, the Reds will have to consider moving one of the two this winter. Votto is due to make $17 million in 2013 and become a free agent in the 2014. A $17 million price tag is hard to fit into an $85 or $90 million budget, which is what the Reds payroll figures to be in 2013. It will be hard for Cincinnati to fit Votto's contract into their payroll in 2014 and that is assuming the first baseman would want to re-sign with the Reds.
