Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez will remain with Triple-A Indianapolis until the minor league season ends.
"He needs to play," manager Clint Hurdle said. "He needs to figure some things out in this environment. He needs every at-bat he's going to get."
Hurdle stopped short of saying Alvarez would play every day if he returns to Pittsburgh this month.
"I don't think there's entitlement right now for Pedro," Hurdle said. "He's got to earn his way. He's capable of that."
Alvarez still has not agreed to management's request that he play winter ball.
