Lastings Milledge went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and a two-run homer in the Mets' 9-7 victory over Los Angeles.
"You don't know going in what a young kid is going to do, how he's going to react to the opportunity," manager Willie Randolph said. "But we knew going in that he has no fear and wants to play the game and show what he can do.
"It's early. I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and start proclaiming him the next Willie Mays or anything like that. But it's nice to see the kid help us out. We'll see how things play out. I'm not going to start penciling him in as the everyday leftfielder or rightfielder right now."
Said Milledge: "It's not so much proving what I can do because everybody in the front office knows what I can do from playing in spring training and all through my minor league career. I'm not trying to prove anything to anybody. The only thing I want to prove is that I play to win -- that I play the game hard and I play the game with energy. That's the only thing I want to prove to everybody."
