Jason Schmidt matched a 102-year-old Giants record with 16 strikeouts, fanning the final three hitters to escape a ninth-inning jam and preserve a 2-1 victory over the Marlins on Tuesday night. He gave up consecutive singles to start the ninth, and a wild pitch put runners at second and third with none out. But manager Felipe Alou stuck with his ace, who fanned Miguel Cabrera, Josh Willingham and Jeremy Hermida to end the game. He tied the franchise record for strikeouts set by Christy Mathewson on October 3, 1904, against St. Louis. Schmidt also broke the Giants record of 15 strikeouts accomplished by Gaylord Perry on July 22, 1966, against Philadelphia.
