Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira left Tuesday night's game against the Red Sox after being drilled in the right knee by a Jon Lester pitch.
Teixeira was hit with a 90 mph cut fastball and rolled around home plate in pain, clutching his knee.
He was helped off the field and X-rays revealed only a bruise on the knee. He feared initially that the kneecap has been broken.
"That's the first thing you think about," Teixeira said. "On the knee, you don't have any protection. There's no meat around there to protect that kneecap. Luckily it wasn't right on the kneecap, which would have been bad."
Teixeira said he hopes to play Wednesday night, but manager Joe Girardi said that is doubtful.
