The Cardinals will be without third baseman David Freese for at least a month because of a broken hand.
He suffered the injury in the team's game against the Braves on Sunday.
"I learned a long time ago losing a game is not even close to the same kind of disappointment of losing Freese," manager Tony La Russa said after the loss. "That by far overshadows" everything.
Atlanta reliever Scott Linebrink's fastball in the sixth inning hit Freese above a finger, causing him to immediately recoil in pain.
