Pitcher Braden Looper decided to retire on Friday after he was told by the Cubs that he will not be on the Opening Day roster.
The 36-year-old Looper, who had a non-guaranteed minor league deal, posted a 9.95 ERA in 12 1/3 innings over five appearances this spring. He missed the entire 2010 season after struggling with injuries in 2009 with the Brewers. Looper finished with a 72-65 record and a 4.15 ERA in 12 major league seasons, according to an ESPN.com report.
"He certainly had an outstanding career," GM Jim Hendry said. "[Having him in camp] really was a good, sound idea and I'm glad we did it."
