Randy Johnson had thrown 87 pitches, and the Yankees were leading by only three runs when he came out of the game. Cashman waited an inning, then called the trainers in the clubhouse. "They said, 'It's not a medical issue,' " Cashman said. "I said, 'O.K.' " It was a suspiciously early exit for Johnson in an eventual 9-3 victory, but apparently there was no reason for alarm. Asked if he would make his next start Wednesday in Toronto, Johnson responded sarcastically. "I would suspect it," he said, "unless I get hit by a car or fall down the steps." Manager Joe Torre said that Ron Guidry, the pitching coach, told him Johnson was stiff during yesterday's game, although Torre said he did not know where.
