Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter isn't under contract for the 2011 season and the week after the team was eliminated from the playoffs the two sides have yet to open negotiations.
New York was sent home by Texas in Game 6 of the ALCS on Friday night.
Jeter isn't the team's only big-name free agent with Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera unsigned as well.
The popular belief is that Jeter will definitely return to the Yankees, but his stay at shortstop and cost remain variables.
"There's still game left in that guy and he's going to be a part of this franchise," general manager Brian Cashman said of Jeter.
"We'll work something out that we're both comfortable with ... Derek obviously has been and will be an important part of this organization. How it gets defined in this new negotiation is yet to be determined."
