In Francisco Liriano's first appearance since returning from the World Baseball Classic, he delivered a one-inning performance that did more than put heat on Scott Baker in the battle for the fifth starter's spot.
Liriano also added validity to Gardenhire's argument that the team might be best served to start the season with this prized prospect in the bullpen.
General Manager Terry Ryan is reluctant to use Liriano in a relief role because, he said, he feels it could stunt Liriano's development.
But Gardenhire has been dissatisfied with the team's other lefthanded relief options this spring.
