Dusty Baker called a brief meeting on Wednesday after pitcher Johnny Cueto struggled in the third inning of Cincinnati's 5-4 win over the New York Mets.
Cueto, catcher Ramon Hernandez and pitching coach Bryan Price all gathered around, but Baker did all the talking.
"I was telling him to slow down," Baker said. "He gets in trouble and he starts rushing. When you get in trouble, that's when you back off and slow down.
"It's something he's getting better at, but that's one thing he has to learn. He starts getting the ball and throwing it and throwing it. Things build. You start hyperventilating."
Cueto made his first quality start in five outings. He went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out eight.
He was very good in all but the third. He walked two, including one to load the bases and one to force in a run.
"He was calm and his composure was good," Baker said. "Then he starts flying open. At least, he's able to catch himself before it gets too bad."
"After Price came out," Cueto said, "I slowed down and went back to my good mechanics."
