The Seattle Mariners on Wednesday signed outfielder-designated hitter Raul Ibanez to a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the club through the 2008 season. Financial terms were not disclosed, but Ibanez made more than $4.4 million in 2005. The 33-year-old Ibanez hit .280 with 32 doubles, 20 homers and 89 RBI last season, his fourth consecutive year with at least 30 doubles. He also was one of six players in the major leagues to appear in all 162 games, playing first base, right and left field and designated hitter. "There is really a very limited supply of lefthanded hitters of Raul's caliber," Seattle general manager Bill Bavasi said. "He hits with men on base, hits both lefthanders and righthanders and has a stroke that is a great fit for our ballpark. That's even before you consider his leadership and character."
