Jeff Suppan was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday afternoon with cervical disk pain in his neck.
Suppan said the problem originally was detected during his physical examination at the start of camp but the belief was he could pitch with it and it would be OK with treatment. Then, he said it began to go south on him in recent days.
"It just kind of plateaued," said Suppan. "I was getting treatment every day and it was feeling better but lately it's just been the same."
An MRI performed Monday evening detected a disk slightly out of alignment, said Suppan, that sometimes caused sciatic pain down his arms. With some rest, treatment and a lighter workload for a period, the thinking is that it will calm down and allow Suppan to pitch again.
"We just want to give it a little time," he said. "I think it's very minor, but it's there. I'm going to do some exercises to build strength there. It's not like I was feeling it on every pitch."
