Despite leading the Yankees in batting this spring, 32-year-old Jon Weber ? who in 11 previous professional seasons has never spent a day in the major leagues ? was sent to the team?s minor league camp with his next stop being Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. At his locker later, Weber checked his cellphone messages with a crestfallen look on his face. ?Things just didn?t work out,? he said. ?What are you going to do? You can?t control something that?s out of your hands.? He never stopped hitting until Tuesday night, when he went 0 for 4 to drop his average to .483 from .560. ?I wish I was right-handed, but I?m not,? he said. ?I had Joe Girardi, all the coaches, everyone, telling me to stay ready in case something happens,? he added. ?I have to stay focused. I can?t go in the tank right now and get down.? Girardi said he admired Weber?s perseverance and considered him a major league hitter. ?I think he can definitely help,? Girardi said. ?He?s definitely opened eyes,? he added. ?The young man can hit, and his attitude is tremendous.?
