Kerry Wood is scheduled to throw again today as part of his long-toss regimen at Cubs camp. If all goes well, that will put a positive spin on a day when pitchers and catchers officially report to spring training to get ready for the first workout Thursday.
If Wood continues to progress, trainer Mark O'Neal said Tuesday, the Cubs probably will decide within the next week how soon he can get back on the mound and test his right shoulder, which was surgically repaired in September.
"We want [pitching coach] Larry Rothschild to evaluate his arm strength and go from there,'' O'Neal said. "We will have more of a feel within the next week for how far we are before he throws on the mound. His long toss will be with a fair amount of intensity, but we are concentrating now on the volume of throws rather than the intensity.''
