Rory Markas, one of the Los Angeles Angels' play-by-play announcers for the radio station AM 830 has passed away at the age of 54. The cause of the death was not immediately known.
Markas will be remembered for his memorable call of Game 7 of the 2002 World Series when Darin Erstad caught the final out for the Angels first World Series Championship: "Erstad says he's got it! Erstad makes the catch! The Anaheim Angels are champions of baseball!"
"I think now everybody should just celebrate what a good person he was," broadcast partner Terry Smith told AM 830.
Markas was designated to take over with Mark Gubicza for the Angels TV broadcasts in 2010 since the contracts of Steve Physioc and Rex Hudler were not renewed.
Markas who coined the famous phrase in southern California, "Just another Halos victory," was also the announcer for the USC basketball team. He had been with the Angels for eight seasons.
From 1994-97, he was the lead announcer for the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers.
