San Diego general manager Jed Hoyer is looking for bargains with between $5 million and $8 million to spend this winter.
Hoyer is seeking a right-handed-hitting center fielder, a backup catcher, a utility infielder and a veteran pitcher on the free-agent market.
There are still 121 major league free agents on the market.
"There are going to be some bargains out there as spring training approaches," says Hoyer. "There will be players, although you might not be able to be selective.
"We want to be sure we target a handful."
