The Red Sox are working hard to acquire first baseman Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres, sources told FOX Sports.
Sources added that a deal isn't close, and might not happen at all, because new San Diego general manager, and former Boston executive, Jed Hoyer has set a high price for Gonzalez.
"Jed has been asking for a ton," one source said.
Gonzalez is signed for $4.75 million next season with a $5.5 million club option for 2011.
Boston's signing of John Lackey will give them the flexibility to trade right-hander Clay Buchholz, who likely would be the centerpiece of any package for Gonzalez.
In addition, signing Mike Cameron might allow them to consider moving Jacoby Ellsbury.
