Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak met with the agent for free-agent outfielder Matt Holliday for 90 minutes on Sunday night.
However, the meeting failed to produce a formal offer from the club.
Mozeliak acknowledged on Monday that there is a gulf between the team and agent Scott Boras.
"If you're trying to put a square peg into a round hole, it's not going to work," Mozeliak said. "It's why we're trying to be somewhat patient in this process because it may find a way to work itself out."
Mozeliak noted "three to five" options the club may explore while it waits on Holliday.
