Amid their pursuit of Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada, the Red Sox also have continued discussions with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on a fallback option that could deliver Julio Lugo to Boston. According to sources, talks between the Sox and Devil Rays have progressed to the point where a deal could be within striking distance. That is a change from much of this offseason, during which the Devil Rays have remained rigid in talks with all clubs regarding their players. Until recently, there had been some suggestion that Tampa was seeking one of the Sox? two prized pitching prospects, Jonathan Papelbon and Jon Lester. Recent indications, however, are that the Sox would be able to acquire Lugo for third baseman Andy Marte, whom the Sox obtained from the Atlanta Braves last month in exchange for Edgar Renteria. In effect, a Marte-for-Lugo swap means the Sox will have traded Renteria for Lugo, though the Sox are still paying an annual average of nearly $4 million on Renteria?s contract through the 2008 season.
