Hideki Matsui hit four home runs in three games at Fenway Park this weekend and is surging offensively. "I knew in my heart I couldn't use my knees as an excuse," Matsui told the New York Daily News. "I had to prove to myself I could put up the numbers." Matsui (23) is second only to Mark Teixeira (31) on the Yankees in terms of home runs. "The positive is that I have been able to stay healthy and my knees haven't given me much of a problem," Matsui said. "But I honestly feel I can do better. Also, I want to play defense, not for selfish reasons, but for the team. Being a DH limits the team's choices and I feel bad that I'm doing that." Matsui is in the final season of a four-year, $52 million contract. "My honest answer is I don't know," Matsui said of returning to New York. "I don't have an answer. As a player, you just try to do better than what you've done before. It's not so much about how the organization or other clubs look at me. All I'm focused on is winning a championship."
