The Red Sox are the team that has claimed Mets reliever Billy Wagner off waivers, sources told ESPN on Friday.
The Mets have until Tuesday afternoon to work out a deal with Boston, who would have to assume about $3.5 million in salary that is still owed to the former closer.
If no deal is struck, New York can allow Boston to take Wagner outright or pull him off waivers.
