A lot has been made of the Yankees' pitching staff this season, and their league-worst ERA (6.41) heading into Sunday night's game against the Red Sox. Entering the season, New York was thought to have one of the best rotations in all of baseball, thanks in large part to the signings of CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, and the return of the injured Chien Ming-Wang. While it's true that Sabathia (4.81 ERA) and Burnett (5.47 ERA) haven't been as good as expected, a majority of the blame for New York's bloated ERA belongs on the shoulders of Wang. Wang has pitched just six innings in three starts for the Yankees, allowing 23 earned runs for a 34.50 ERA. If you remove Wang's numbers of the Yankee rotation, their collective ERA drops from 6.41 to 5.28. The number still isn't good, but it is far from the worst in the Major Leagues. Without Wang, New York's ERA would jump to 23rd in baseball, ahead of the Angels, Twins and defending-champion Phillies.
