Citi Field opened on Sunday as St. John's lost to Georgetown 6-4 in a college baseball game.
The schools were hoping to break the NCAA attendance record -- 40,106 at Petco Park in 2004 for a game between San Diego State and Houston -- but the raw and rainy weather kept many fans away.
"It was a great turnout," said former Mets reliever John Franco, who pitched for St. John's. "The crowd is a little bit closer to the field, but I think the players are going to enjoy it and I think the fans are really going to enjoy it."
The Mets will play at Citi Field for the first time this weekend in exhibition games against the Red Sox.
