Chicago White Sox general manager Ken Williams thinks there's a good chance Paul Konerko will remain with the World Series champions. "Ultimately, when it's all said and done, you have a player that wants to be in Chicago and you have a club that wants him to be in Chicago. So I'm optimistic that something will work out," Williams said Tuesday at the GM meetings. Williams said he's been talking with Konerko's agent, Craig Landis. The All-Star first baseman hit .283 with 40 homers and 100 RBI during the regular season, then was MVP of the AL Championship Series win against the Los Angeles Angels. He hit a grand slam in Game 2 of the World Series sweep over Houston, the first Series title for the White Sox since 1917. Konerko had an $8.75 million base salary last season, then became a free agent after the Series. Last offseason, Chicago decided not to discuss an extension. "Paul and his camp were amenable to sitting down and talking about something before the season," Williams said. "I made the decision that I wanted to see how this team fit together, so at this point I can't very well not return the respect that he had given us all year long with our choice of waiting and not at least afford him the opportunity to look at what his options are."
