From all accounts, Nomar Garciaparra would love to return to the Cubs for a third season. But the veteran shortstop whom the Cubs made it a priority to keep is Neifi Perez, who has agreed to terms on a two-year deal that is expected to be announced on Tuesday. Agent Paul Kinzer, who also represents free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal, worked out the deal with the Cubs. Furcal appears to be the Cubs' primary target, but the Atlanta Braves hold exclusive negotiating rights through Thursday. Perez, who joined the Cubs late in 2004, replaced an injured Garciaparra and became the Cubs' primary shortstop last season. He started 118 games at shortstop and another 18 at second base, hitting .274 with nine home runs and 54 RBIs. His versatility was attractive to the Cubs, who see him as a contingency plan at both middle-infield positions. Ronny Cedeno, who hit .300 in 41 games last season, is expected to get a shot at regular playing time at either shortstop or second base, depending on whether the Cubs sign Furcal or another veteran middle infielder.
