The return to gold standard of shortstop Omar Vizquel, older and defensively tighter, highlighted the National League Rawlings Gold Glove Awards announced Wednesday afternoon. San Francisco's Vizquel earned his 10th career Gold Glove -- with three different teams -- to become the oldest middle infielder ever cited for fielding excellence, headlining the veteran NL team assembled by a vote of managers and coaches. Outfielders Andruw Jones of Atlanta and St. Louis' Jim Edmonds were both honored for the eighth time, while Cubs right-hander Greg Maddux, who long ago has had to count Gold Gloves with his toes, received No. 15. Catcher Mike Matheny, also new to the Giants, bagged his third straight Gold Glove, and fourth overall. The Gold Glove infield also includes Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee, reclaiming an award he first earned in 2003, and Florida second baseman Luis Castillo, who won his third straight Gold Glove. Opportunity opened the door for a pair of first-time winners. Eight-season veteran Mike Lowell of the Marlins ruled at third base, where Scott Rolen's reign of five straight seasons was ended by a shoulder injury. And Philadelphia right fielder Bobby Abreu stepped into the golden shoes of Steve Finley, who last winter signed on with the American League's Angels.
