The Phillies are continuing to make their push to re-sign closer Billy Wagner. They made another offer to Wagner and his agent, Bean Stringfellow, late yesterday afternoon, although it was unclear how much closer the Phillies had moved toward Wagner's asking price. Wagner is looking for a three-year contract for $27 million to $30 million, with some type of no-trade protection. The Phillies are believed to have guaranteed three years and sweetened the financial package, which also had performance bonuses. Wagner is eligible for free agency after the World Series. Phillies president David Montgomery and assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. showed how serious they were about re-signing Wagner when they met with the closer and Stringfellow last week in Richmond, Va. Both sides called the meeting productive, although Wagner's agent said he was disappointed in the financial terms of last week's offer. Wagner, 34, would be highly sought on the free-agent market. The Boston Red Sox, New York Mets and Atlanta Braves could be looking for closers, and Wagner is considered one of the top closers in baseball. He was 4-3 with a 1.51 ERA and 38 saves this season. Opponents hit just .165 against him. Wagner could not be reached for comment. The Phillies hoped to hear from his agent soon.
