Ken Griffey Jr. hit the 601st home run of his career on Sunday afternoon, but the Yankees defeated the Reds 4-1 to avoid a sweep, according to The Associated Press.
Griffey homered in the eighth inning off Kyle Farnsworth with the Yankees already leading 4-0.
Andy Pettitte kept Cincinnati off the board for seven innings, and Mariano Rivera slammed the door shut with a four-out save.
"We wanted this one badly, but it's tough to sweep these guys," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.
