Tampa Bay Rays' left-hander Scott Kazmir has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for May, marking the first monthly honor of his career. Kazmir posted a 5-1 record with a 1.22 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 37.0 innings of work in May, allowing five earned runs on 22 hits and 13 walks. After beginning the season on the disabled list with a left elbow strain, the 2006 A.L. All-Star returned to the mound on May 4th against Boston. St. Louis Cardinals' right-hander Todd Wellemeyer, who was 4-0 with a 2.19 ERA in May, has been voted National League Pitcher of the Month. Wellemeyer won a career-best four straight decisions, tossing 37.0 innings in which he allowed 11 runs (nine earned), 28 hits (two home runs), and recorded 12 strikeouts and 12 walks. On May 9th at Milwaukee, the 29-year-old worked 6.0 innings and did not allow an earned run in his no-decision. In two starts vs. Pittsburgh (May 14th and May 30th), Todd worked seven innings and limited the Pirates to one run en route to winning both games.
