Representatives from major league teams, the players union, and the commissioner's office with meet in New York later this month to discuss the future of maple bats, according to The New York Times. The bats have become a hot topic as of late because they have a tendency to shatter in multiple pieces when they break. ?I really don?t know what?s going to come out of this,? the Mets' Aaron Heilman said. ?What we?re going to do is take a serious look at the safety issues and see if something needs to be done, what can be done, and what the viable options are.? ?When you?re trying to take away weight from the handle and add it to the barrel, it?s not very evenly balanced,? said David Wright, who uses both maple and ash bats. ?When it cracks, it tends to shatter.?
