The Toronto Blue Jays acquired first baseman Lyle Overbay on Thursday from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for pitcher Dave Bush, outfielder Gabe Gross, and young pitching prospect Zach Jackson.
The 28-year-old Overbay hit 19 home runs along with 72 runs batted in and a .276 batting average with the Brewers last season. The former Diamondbacks draft pick also collected 148 base hits and scored 80 runs in 2005.
Dave Bush, 26, struck out 75 batters in 136 innings last season while compiling a 5-11 record. Gabe Gross, despite having a solid spring training, spent most of 2005 in AAA with the Syracuse SkyChiefs. Gross, 26, had 92 plate appearances with Toronto ? hitting for an average of .250. The young pitcher Zach Jackson split time with three minor league clubs last season, finishing the year with Syracuse.
Breaking Down The Deal
Lyle Overbay brings a solid bat to the Blue Jays lineup. He is a good run producer with some power. Overbay has a steady glove and should provide the Toronto with good defense in 2006. His limitations include his lack of true first baseman power and the tendency to be streaky.
Milwaukee obtains three young players, two of which could make the opening day roster. Dave Bush pitched in the big leagues last year. He possesses a good fastball and curveball. The question marks for the 26-year-old Bush are the same for any young pitcher entering the big leagues - consistency and confidence with runners in scoring position. Gabe Gross does not possess much power, but has shown the ability to drive in runs. If he can repeat his performance from last year?s spring training he will definitely make the Brewers ? whether he stays there or not is another story. Zach Jackson, a former 1st round selection, has a nice fastball and a great circle change. He relies on hitters putting the ball in play to get outs.
Edge: Milwaukee Brewers
? Toronto needed to add a bat to their lineup and while Overbay fits the bill, the Blue Jays may have surrendered too much. Gross and Bush have good chances to play in Milwaukee next season. Jackson could emerge into a solid mid-rotation pitcher down the road. I give a slight edge to the Milwaukee Brewers in this deal, the Blue Jays will to win, however, continues to impress me.
