Sean Burroughs played in the Little League World Series as a young boy growing up in Long Beach and the son of former major leaguer Jeff Burroughs. Gehrig, Ruth, Cobb, pre-pubescent eleven year old girl; the national baseball hall of fame finally hit the nail on the head when they chose to display Katie Brownell?s jersey after she pitched a perfect game. Granted, a perfect game is a near impossible feat under any circumstances let alone an eleven year old however is it justified to enshrine a child alongside career proven athletes. ?But she was the only girl on the field,? many may say, as a retort I only have this to offer, does it really make a difference. Unless your that twelve year old Ukrainian body builder whose testicles will never fall due to excessive injections of horse semen, it doesn?t matter amongst pre teens if you?re a boy or girl. Although there are many mental and emotional developments amongst the two at that age, muscle growth only really begins to occur several years down the road. There is also the question of to what extent should young kids be involved in sports. In my personal opinion it is absolutely necessary however the competitive factor is not as important as other aspects. Sports are naturally fun, when you play you get exercise and learn lessons that will stay with you for the rest of your life, and when you just watch, you drink with friends and learn lessons that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Kids should want the taste of victory however not to the point where it becomes more important than say anything aside from working out and eating weight gain vitamins. Another major issue is the pressure from parents, personally I find this atrocious. I don?t necessarily frown upon the method of parenting itself; it?s when you attach the idea of sports to it that things begin to sour. There have been cases of assault at the events themselves, not from the kids, but from the over enthused parents. It was even documented in a recent episode of the famed South Park series. When will people realize, this behavior is unacceptable, it sets a bad example and taints what might be natural talent. We as a society should follow the lessons set by others, forget about children?s sports, participating in soccer riots is much more fulfilling and rewarding and no one will complain about you in therapy years down the line.
