Return to MLB Prospect index Chris Tillman - RHP Chris Tillman Scouting Report - Tillman was acquired by the Orioles in the Erik Bedard trade. He was drafted 49th overall in the 2006 draft by Seattle. - Born April 15th, 1988 in Anaheim, California. Tillman is 6'5", 195 lbs. - He stuck out 154 batters in 135.2 innings while walking 65 in 135.2 innings of work during the 2008 season in Double-A Bowie. He had a 3.18 ERA and a SWHIP of 0.222, which was very impressive for a 20-year-old at that level. Tillman finished 2008 especially strong with strikeouts against 36.7% of the batters he faced in August, up from his season mark of 26.6. He also lowered his walk rate that month, but his command is still occasionally a problem and needs to do a better job in keeping the ball on the ground. He was the youngest pitcher in the entire Eastern League. - Tillman has a very good curve and a fastball in the low 90s. His delivery is fluid and though he's a little slight in build, should hold up well. His change-up has nice potential but it isn't a reliable offering. Tillman has an excellent makeup on the mound. - Ranked 16th by Baseball Prospectus in their Top 100 Prospects for 2009. Ranked 22nd by Baseball America. - Pitching four Spring Training innings in 2009, Tillman struck out three, walked three and gave up one earned run. He was a fairly early cut, as Baltimore is taking a conservative approach with their young prospects.
