Return to MLB Prospect index Henry Sosa - RHP Henry Sosa Scouting Report - Born on July 28th, 1985 in the Dominican Republic. - Sosa has consistently struck out at least one batter for every inning of work. - In 2008, Sosa struck out 58 batters in 56.1 innings, but had a 4.31 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. This was a season in which he had surgery to repair a torn patella tendon in his left knee. - He throws in the low to mid 90's with a great deal of consistency. His command with the fastball needs improvement and he has a propensity for throwing it too high in the zone. - His curve is a solid pitch that can become dangerous if he can do a better job locating it. - Sosa's BABIP while in San Jose (high Single-A) has been frightening. He yielded a mark of .349 in 2007 and .361 in 2008. This has been a direct result of his inability to keep the ball down against better hitters, as his groundball rate unsurprisingly has been below 40%. - Appeared in the 2007 All-Star Future Game at AT&T Park. - The Giants have not given up on the idea of Sosa becoming a starter, but his command and lack of quality secondary pitches makes me believe his future is more likely as a reliever.
