Now that the pomp and circumstance of Opening Day and the first two weeks of the season are in the books, RealGM is ready to determine which player we would rather build a franchise around. We have cut 32 players down to the final two: Jose Reyes and Albert Pujols. Here is how the Mets? shortstop and the Cardinals? first baseman arrived in the finals. First Round Alex Rodriguez defeats Daisuke Matsuzaka (65%) Vernon Wells defeats Miguel Tejada (80%) Carl Crawford defeats Grady Sizemore (52%) Johan Santana defeats Paul Konerko (96%) Justin Verlander defeats Luke Hochevar (87%) Vladimir Guerrero defeats Rich Harden (75%) Mark Teixeira defeats Felix Hernandez (54%) Miguel Cabrera defeats Andruw Jones (74%) Ryan Howard defeats David Wright (55%) Jason Bay defeats Ryan Zimmerman (70%) Albert Pujols defeats Alfonso Soriano (89%) Ben Sheets defeats Adam Dunn (68%) Roy Oswalt defeats Jake Peavy (72%) Matt Holliday defeats Stephen Drew (73%) Matt Cain defeats Chad Billingsley (65%) Jose Reyes defeats Derek Jeter (51%) Second Round Vernon Wells defeated Alex Rodriguez (57%) Johan Santana defeated Carl Crawford (90%) Vladimir Guerrero defeated Justin Verlander (70%) Jose Reyes defeated Mark Teixiera (76%) Ryan Howard defeated Miguel Cabrera (59%) Albert Pujols defeated Jason Bay (90%) Roy Oswalt defeated Ben Sheets (83%) Matt Cain defeated Matt Holliday (54%) Elite Eight Johan Santana defeated Vernon Wells (65%) Jose Reyes defeated Vladimir Guerrero (66%) Albert Pujols defeated Ryan Howard (74%) Roy Oswalt defeated Matt Cain (70%) Final Four Albert Pujols defeated Roy Oswalt (88%) Jose Reyes defeated Johan Santana (55%) Odds and Ends Closest Match-Up: Derek Jeter and Jose Reyes were the 31st and 32nd players who qualified for the tournament due to a vote-in. Reyes narrowly defeated Jeter by taking 51% of the vote, but has now reached the finals. Could Have Been A Finalist If Not For The Second Round: Alex Rodriguez met his end in the second round at the hands of Toronto?s Vernon Wells. Rodriguez was very much a powerhouse #1 seed who was taken down by a gritty #8 or #9 seed with a little homecourt advantage on their side. Do-Over: If I were to recommend a do-over, it would be Mark Teixeira?s narrow first round victory over Felix Hernandez. Teixeira has stumbled out of the gate in 2007 while Hernandez nearly no-hit the Red Sox and has struck out 18 batters in 17 innings. He also hasn?t yielded a single run in either of his two starts.
