The Detroit Tigers signed left-handed pitcher Kenny Rogers on Thursday. The former Texas All-Star?s deal is worth $16 million over two years.
Rogers, 41, was not offered salary arbitration on Wednesday night, thus becoming an unrestricted free agent. The veteran southpaw won 14 games last season and compiled a 3.46 ERA with Texas. He is ten wins away from reaching the 200 mark for his career.
Breaking Down The Deal
This is an interesting signing by Detroit. This will likely be the last contract Rogers signs in the Major Leagues. He enters a more pitcher-friendly ballpark which could lower his ERA. But he continues to lose fastball velocity each year and is unable to throw his slider due to past shoulder problems. I think the 41-year-old Rogers, barring injury, will provide the club with 10-15 wins and great defense (won a Gold Glove Award in 2005).
My Grade: [C+] ? Rogers will likely deteriorate as the season moves along. Though he pitched well for the first half of 2005 with Texas, I do not expect him to repeat that performance due to a decrease in velocity. If Rogers gets injured early on, this signing could be a disaster.
