Jose Canseco, celebrated major league ballplayer and now one of the leading forces into the connection between performance enhancing drugs and baseball, is making a comeback into the game he has been trying to break down for the last year. Canseco, a day after his 42nd birthday, made his debut with the San Diego Surf Dogs Monday night in Nettleton Stadium in Chico, California against the Chico Outlaws in Golden Baseball League action. In a press conference before the game, Canseco hit on a plethora of issues, including his upcoming movie based on the book Juiced, his future involvement in the investigation done by George Mitchell and Major League Baseball, and how he sees the Major League Baseball drug testing policy actually working. Canseco, the self-proclaimed Godfather of Performance Enhancing Drugs, said that while his return isn?t solely for the promotion of his new movie, it did play a role in his return to the game. Canseco said that an announcement on his movie should be coming in the next few days, and that it should be expected to have the information already in his book, and plenty of other information he wasn?t able to put in the book at the present time. ?Once the movie is produced, you will know who the real Jose Canseco is,? Canseco said. ?This movie is going to be devastating.? Canseco also said that he is working on two new books with no timeline on when they are suspected to be due out. As the press conference grew on, the questions about steroids persisted as Canseco began to delve into what he believed were the inner workings behind the current steroid policy. Along the way, Canseco even referred to Major League Baseball as the ?mafia? and said that they manipulate the test results. One example Canseco gave was that if a player like Roger Clemens tested positive, they could hide the results if they desired. When he was questioned about why he chose to use Clemens? name, a former teammate, Canseco plainly said, ?Just an example, just an example.? Canseco said that he will speak with George Mitchell and his team in the next few weeks because baseball now knows that this begins and ends with Jose Canseco. ?I think what we are seeing is just the tip of the iceberg,? Canseco said regarding the recent events that have come to light in the ever-going steroid investigations. On a day that saw Canseco deliver many theories on the topic of steroids, maybe the most surprising one was the notion that Rafael Palmeiro cut a deal with Major League Baseball to testify against Canseco since Palmeiro is also of Cuban decent and was a well-respected member of the game who was on the doorstep of the hallow 500-3,000 group. Asked how he knows such things, Canseco simply said, ?I know what I know.? Canseco will play for the league maximum $2,500 dollars a month for the rest of the season that will see him play mostly designated hitter and also have brief showcases of his new knuckle ball.
