The New York Yankees added another reliever to the fold on Tuesday by signing reliever Octavio Dotel to a 1-year contract worth $2 million.
The 32-year-old Dotel missed most of the 2005 season due to a right elbow injury. The former Mets draft pick struck out 16 batters in 15 innings and compiled a 3.52 ERA last season with the Oakland Athletics.
Dotel is expected to miss the first half of the 2006 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The ex-closer joins Kyle Farnsworth, Ron Villone, and Mike Myers in a revamped Yankee bullpen.
Breaking Down The Deal
New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman continues to add quality arms to the bullpen. Octavio Dotel has a murderous fastball and is able to shut down left-handed hitters. If able to recover from elbow surgery, Dotel will be a valuable asset to a Yankee bullpen that has struggled mightily over the past few seasons. He will likely serve as the bridge to closer Mariano Rivera.
