Free agent pitcher Matt Morris is on the move. The 31-year-old right-hander signed a 3-year contract with the San Francisco Giants worth $27 million on Monday.
Morris, who leaves the St. Louis Cardinals after nine seasons, posted a 14-11 record during the 2005 campaign along with a 4.11 ERA. The New York (Middleton) native struck out 117 batters in 192 innings pitched.
The right-handed Morris was drafted by the Cardinals in the first round of the 1995 amateur draft. Morris produced his best season in 2001 with a 22-8 record and an ERA of 3.16.
Breaking Down The Deal
This is a great addition to the Giants pitching staff. In Morris, the club obtains a # 2 starter to follow Jason Schmidt and precede Noah Lowry. Morris has great control and solid command of the strike zone. The only question marks for Morris are his slow delivery and his inability to demonstrate postseason consistency. Staying in the National League will also help his cause. The Texas Rangers were rumored to be interested in his services ? that possibility might have been a disaster for Morris. He is definitely capable of posting 15-17 wins for the Giants next season.
