Josh Byrnes is one of the young guns in the general managing world, coming to the Arizona Diamondbacks after the 2005 season. In his first general managing job, he was handed a great franchise with loads of young talent and in just his second year, he has this team primed for a division title.
Byrnes, previously worked under Theo Epstein with the Boston Red Sox, and brings to Arizona some new age thinking. During his short time, he has allowed his young players to come up to the major league club and learn on the job.
Some stars that are being born this season are Chris Young and Stephen Drew. However, it was two moves that brought in Eric Byrnes and Orlando Hudson that have really cemented this team as a contender.
He also has had the luxury of having a staff ace in Brandon Webb to anchor a rotation that has been in some influx that last few seasons.
It is tough to judge the style of Byrnes because of the fact that Byrnes has had the advantage of relying on young talent that has been stockpiled over the course of a few years.
From what I have seen, it looks like Byrnes will look to build from within and trust his baseball people to lead him in the draft, free agency and trades. He also seems ready to go with Bob Melvin as his long term manager to give stability to his on-field team.
Most of the success Byrnes has endured is because of past regimes, but it still takes some talent to not screw it up. It is unfair to grade Byrnes right now, but early return say he should be a keeper for the foreseeable future.
Signature Move: Just months after taking the job, Byrnes pulled off a deal with the Chicago White Sox that gave the Diamondbacks Chris Young as part of the Javier Vazquez trade. Young is a dynamite player who has five-tool potential and should slide into a Carlos Beltran type player for the Diamondbacks over the next decade.
