2007 has been another disappointing year for the Cincinnati Reds that saw manager Jerry Narron lose his job mid-season. Now with interim manager Pete Mackanin in charge and the team playing better ball, could fortunes be turning around for the Reds? Krivsky took over the general manager position in February of 2006 after spending a lot of time in baseball, most recently with the Minnesota Twins. He was the man in charge when the Reds traded for starter Bronson Arroyo during spring training of 2006 and then again in April when they acquired infielder Brandon Phillips from the Cleveland Indians. He has also done a nice job of developing young talent in the minor league system, but pitching talent is still a big void for this franchise. Right now, they are looking to lean on first baseman Joey Votto and outfielder Jay Bruce to go along with their only pitching option in Homer Bailey. With these young players to go along with guys like Ken Griffey Jr. Adam Dunn, Aaron Harang and Edwin Encarnacion, it is tough to figure out why this team doesn?t have more success. From moves made by Krivsky, it appears he believes it is manager-related and if his time in Minnesota has any factor in the decision making process, then you can expect him to look for a stable candidate. The Twins have stayed successful in large part to having Tom Kelly and then his able assistant Ron Gardenhire. Who that might be in anyone?s guess, but names like Tony LaRussa and Dusty Baker could be possible options. Krivsky is in his second year, so it is unfair to decide what kind of general manager he is. However, unless he hires the right manager in the off-season and this team can start living up to their talents, Krivsky will get the reputation of being an underachiever very quickly in this industry. Signature Move: It has to be the addition of Phillips in the beginning of the 2006 season. Phillips was a top prospect gone south with the Indians, but Krivsky took the chance on his talents and it has paid off. If the Reds get back into contention in the future, expect Phillips to be one of the team?s cornerstones. Will Krivsky turn around the Reds? Email your thoughts to [email protected]
