Roger Clemens? return to baseball certainly had an impact on the rankings with the Houston Astros, who didn?t get him, and the New York Yankees, who did. However, the Boston Red Sox didn?t see a change as they retained their top spot in this week?s rankings. Read on to see where your favorite team slots this week.
Records are through action Sunday, May 6
1. (1) Boston Red Sox (20-10):
Why do they need Roger Clemens? Starter Josh Beckett is 6-0 with four quality starts and a 2.72 ERA.
2. (2) Cleveland Indians (18-10):
Catcher Joe Mauer gets all of the attention in the American League, but his central counterpart Victor Martinez has 23 RBI and a .945 OPS.
3. (9) Detroit Tigers (19-11):
They have won seven in a row, but losing reliever Joel Zumaya for 12 weeks could be crushing to one of the team strength?s, the bullpen.
4. (3) Atlanta Braves (19-11):
After a sophomore slump, outfielder Jeff Francoeur has a team leading 27 RBI to go with 11 walks and a .299 average.
5. (5) Milwaukee Brewers (21-10):
They have won seven out of their last eight games. Get used to seeing Milwaukee this high because they are staying here in 2007.
6. (4) New York Mets (19-11):
First baseman Carlos Delgado is only hitting .212 and slugging .292 heading into mid-May. The Mets can?t go deep into the playoffs without a productive Delgado.
7. (11) Los Angeles Dodgers (18-13):
Starter Brad Penny has six quality starts in six games and is 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA. He is becoming the staff ace everyone thought Jason Schmidt would be this season.
8. (19) San Diego Padres (17-14):
They don?t have stars and they aren?t flashy, but the Padres have won five out of six and are just a game out of first.
9. (7) Minnesota Twins (16-15):
If this is his last season in Minnesota, outfielder Tori Hunter is making the most of it with a team-best .345 average and seven stolen bases.
10. (10) San Francisco Giants (16-14):
Outfielder Barry Bonds has looked great early and with his 10 home runs already, the intentional walk signal should be given more with each day.
11. (8) Los Angeles Angels (17-15):
Coming off injury, starter Bartolo Colon is 3-0 with 19 strikeouts and just two walks in four starts.
12. (6) Arizona Diamondbacks (17-16):
They have lost five out of six games and starter Randy Johnson has looked his age in his first three starts back in Arizona.
13. (21) Chicago Cubs (15-14):
Sweet Lou moved Alfonso Soriano back to left field, where he played last season, and the Cubs have won eight out of nine games.
14. (27) New York Yankees (14-15):
Getting Roger Clemens helps in the rankings. So does beating up the Texas Rangers and the Seattle Mariners for five wins in six tries.
15. (12) Cincinnati Reds (14-17):
Outfielder Josh Hamilton should be given the comeback player of the year award right now as he has displayed the five tools promised when he was taken number one overall.
16. (14) Seattle Mariners (13-13):
They showed some life in New York by getting into a bean ball war, but they are still coming back down to earth after all those postponements.
17. (13) Chicago White Sox (14-14):
The power line-up on display after winning the World Series is now hitting a meager .222.
18. (17) Florida Marlins (14-16):
Injuries have crippled a rotation loaded with young talent last season and have left Scott Olsen and Dontrelle Willis to be battered in the early going.
19. (18) Philadelphia Phillies (14-17):
They have fixed their closer problem with Brett Myers and the rotation is rounding into form. This is a dangerous team to watch for in the next few weeks.
20. (15) Oakland A?s (15-15):
Injuries continue to be the story for Oakland, but they are grinding out wins and staying in the race until their stars can integrate back in.
21. (23) Texas Rangers (13-18):
Have you heard of Ian Kinsler down in Texas? Well, the second baseman is hitting .276 with nine home runs and 24 RBI.
22. (22) Baltimore Orioles (14-17):
They have lost 11 out of 14 games and are wasting away the prime years of shortstop Miguel Tejada.
23. (24) Tampa Bay Devil Rays (14-17):
It used to be they didn?t have the talent to compete. Now, the talent is there and all they have to do is learn how to win. Just another set of growing pains for Tampa Bay fans.
24. (28) Houston Astros (14-17):
Losing out on Clemens will turn out to be a blessing. They need to move on behind Roy Oswalt, who is on his way to competing of the Cy Young this season.
25. (20) Pittsburgh Pirates (14-17):
Their pitching staff is allowing opponents to hit .282 this year. That just isn?t good enough with their offense to win consistently.
26. (26) Colorado Rockies (13-18):
Closer Brian Fuentes (7 saves, 3.00 ERA) is the best closer in baseball nobody knows about.
27. (16) Toronto Blue Jays (13-18):
In a top heavy division, early struggles and injuries can derail spring training expectation and maybe cost the job of general manager J.P. Ricciardi.
28. (25) St. Louis Cardinals (12-17):
They were never considered a dominant champion and it looks like their title defense will be over quickly as well.
29. (29) Kansas City Royals (10-22):
They paid big money for starter Gil Meche (3-1, 2.23 ERA) and it is looking like a sound investment thus far.
30. (30) Washington Nationals (9-22):
Some week they will get out of the last spot, but losing seven out of eight games ruined that dream this time around.
