By Darryl Reina We have a "new" #1 and #2 at the top of this weeks rankings. The "quality players" always seem to produce for their respective teams during the month of September. The 2005 season is no exception, as A. Jones, Ortiz, Pujols, A-Rod, Carpenter, D-Lee, and Colon battle for MVP and Cy Young honors. Will these players lead their teams to the Playoffs and World Series? 1. Andruw Jones: The Braves A. Jones leads MLB with 50 HR's and the NL in RBI's with 125, and is now the leading candidate for the NL MVP. He will be facing Pedro & the Mets this weekend in NY. 2. David Ortiz: The AL's leading MVP candidate had a huge week for the Red Sox and now has 42 HR's and a MLB leading 130 RBI's. David will be facing that tough A's pitching staff this weekend in Boston. 3. Albert Pujols: Pujols is hitting .335 for the Cardinals and is closing in on D-Lee for the NL batting title. The consistent 1B will challenge A. Jones for NL MVP down the stretch. 4. Alex Rodriquez: A-Rod has hit 42 HR's and driven in 113 runs for the Yankees. His .319 batting average is good for third place in the AL. 5. Derek Lee: D-Lee is still leading the NL in hitting with an average of .339 (42 HR's). Can he string some hits together in the remaining weeks to hold off Pujols? 6. Chris Carpenter: The leading NL Cy Young candidate is now 21-4 (2.21 ERA, 201 K's). The Cards ace should be rested and ready for the post season. 7. Bartolo Colon: The ace of the Angels staff is the leading AL Cy Young candidate. Colon is 19-6, with a 3.23 ERA. The Angels will rely on him to stop the bleeding they suffered in Seattle. 8. Dontrelle Willis: He hits, he runs, he throws! Willis is 21-8 (2.49 ERA) and is the major reason the Marlins are still contending for the NL wildcard. 9. Miquel Cabrera: Although unknown to many observers outside Miami, this Marlin is hitting .326 and keeps getting those key hits. 10. Mariano Rivera: The NYY closer (38 saves) continues to be the closest to a sure thing there is in the 9th inning. 11. Manny Ramirez: Manny had a down week for the Red Sox, but still added to his HR (35) and RBI (122) totals. 12. Vladamir Guerrero: Guerrero (.313) needs to produce big numbers vs. Detroit this weekend. 13. Derek Jeter: The Yankee Captain is hitting .308 and will need to get hot in Toronto this weekend. 14. Roger Clemens: The NL Cy Young candidate is 12-7 with a 1.77 ERA. The legendary Rocket continues to produce quality starts for the Astros. 15. Gary Sheffield: Hitting as a DH this week, the Yankee slugger is hitting .292, with 102 RBI's. 16. Chad Cordero: The Nationals continue to provide save chances for their closer (MLB best of 46). 17. Randy Johnson: The "Big Unit" has recorded 193 strikeouts and will be counted on for quality starts during the Yankees stretch run. 18. Michael Young: Leads MLB with 199 hits and the AL in hitting with a .328 average. Have you seen this Ranger hit? 19. Mark Teixeira: The Ranger now has 39 HR's and 126 RBI's as he climbs in our player rankings. 20. Johnny Damon: Is hitting .321 and has scored 103 runs for the Red Sox. 21. Johan Santana: The post season has slipped away for the Twins but Santana is 13-7 and will be facing some of the contenders down the stretch. 22. Pedro Martinez: Pedro (14-7, 2.93, 197 K's) continues to give the Mets an opportunity to win everytime out on the mound. 23. Bob Wickman: One of the major reasons Cleveland is competing for the Cental title and the wildcard (41 saves). 24. Cliff Lee: Lee makes our list for the first time this season. His record of 16-4 (2-0, 1.80 in his last 3 games) speaks for itself. 25. Jeff Kent: The veteran LA second baseman is hitting .299 and has 100 RBI's. Will he spoil any last ditch chances for the Giants this weekend? Honorable Mention: Sean Casey, Joe Nathan, Marcus Giles, Mark Mulder, Richie Sexon, David Wright, Paul Konerko, Mark Buehrle, Ken Griffey, Jake Peavy, Chipper Jones, Andy Pettitte, Bobby Abreu and Jon Garland.
