Draft - Baseball Wiretap
Potential Top Overall Pick In 2011 Hit 570 Foot Home Run
Bryce Harper of Las Vegas, Nevada is the early favorite to become the number one pick in the 2011 MLB Draft.
Harper is a sophomore in high school and reportedly hit a ball 570 feet as a freshman.
At this year's International High School Power Showcase, a home run derby at the Tropicana Dome in Florida in January, Harper bashed a 502-foot home run.
"He's a good one," confirms Yankees regional scout Matt Hyde. "Boy, for his age, he's certainly advanced. He's a strong kid. He's fun to watch play.
"But it's so early. There's a lot of guys who get drafted in the first round that you never hear about. There's so many variables."
Harper is currently a catcher, but he might eventually make a switch to the outfield.
He is also already being advised by Scott Boras, which might be a smart move for the phenom with a 3.5 grade point average.
Strasburg K's 18 On Thursday
Stephen Strasburg struck out 18 in eight innings against the Toreros on Thursday, the third time in three starts Strasburg has reached double-digit strikeouts. Strasburg has 45 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings.
The expected number one overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft will make his next start Friday, March 13th against UNLV.
