Yankees Extend Home Run Streak To 28 Games

Jun 26, 2019 9:47 AM

The New York Yankees have broken the Major League record for consecutive games with a home run.

DJ LeMahieu hit a leadoff home run against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night to extend the streak.

The Yankees have homered in 28 straight games, breaking the record set by the 2002 Texas Rangers.

"I've heard the players comment on it, and they're very aware of it," Aaron Boone said after the game. "It's impressive to me. It's a tribute to having a lot of really good hitters and guys that could hit for power."

During this streak, 14 Yankees have combined to hit 51 home runs.

Dodgers Get Third-Straight Rookie Walk-Off Win

Jun 24, 2019 8:22 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers got another walk-off victory from a rookie on Sunday as they bested the Colorado Rockies 6-3.

It was the third-straight game that a rookie produced a walk-off hit.

Will Smith, recalled from Triple-A on Sunday, hit a pinch-hit three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday.

Alex Verdugo homered against the Rockies in the bottom of the 11th inning for a 5-4 victory on Saturday. Matt Beaty was the hero Friday when he hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Dodgers a 4-2 victory over Colorado.

"Three games in a row is pretty remarkable. Just when you think it couldn't get any better, can't get any better, it does," Dave Roberts said. "Will just got here last night. To come out and play a big role in this game, speaks a lot to his preparation."

Pete Alonso Ties NL Rookie Home Run Record

Jun 21, 2019 9:56 AM

Pete Alonso hit a two-run home run in the New York Mets' 7-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

It was Alonso's 25th home run, tying the record for most homers by a National League rookie before the All-Star break set by Cody Bellinger in 2017.

He became the first rookie in NL history to hit at least 25 home runs in his team's first 75 games of the season.

"He's probably the one guy in our lineup right now that you're gonna say, 'Don't let him beat us,'" Mickey Callaway said. "They're not just trying to get ahead and making sure they get a strike. Pete does a good job of laying off the ones he can't hit, and when they make one mistake, he makes them pay."

Max Scherzer Posts Seven Shutout Innings With Broken Nose

Jun 20, 2019 10:11 AM

Despite suffering a broken nose and black eye one day prior, Max Scherzer tossed seven shutout innings for the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

"Trust me, this thing looks a lot worse than it actually is," Scherzer said. "I felt zero pain. There's been plenty of other injuries where I felt a lot of pain and I've had to pitch through. I'll hang my hat on those starts, but tonight I felt zero pain. This is part of what you have to do. You take the ball every fifth time.

"That's my responsibility to the team, to make sure I always post, and I knew I could post tonight."

Scherzer bunted a ball off his face during Tuesday's batting practice.

"Going out there and throwing, the only thing I had to deal with was the swelling underneath the eye," he said. "It was kind of jiggling around, and so in warm-ups I just had to get used to knowing what it was feeling like to throw the ball and just have that swelling."

Charlie Blackmon Breaks 58-Year-Old Hitting Mark

Jun 17, 2019 8:03 AM

Charlie Blackmon had 15 hits in the Colorado Rockies' four-game series against the San Diego Padres.

The previous record for hits in a four-game series was 14 -- Buck Jordan of the Boston Braves against the Cardinals, July 17-18, 1934 (consecutive doubleheaders); and Bill White of the Cardinals against the Cubs, July 12-15, 1961.

Blackmon had four hits in each of the first three games of the series.

"The beauty of Charlie is the consistency, day in and day out," Bud Black said. "That's one of Charlie’s strengths, what he does each and every day to prepare to play. He's one of the best I've seen. When you're in a good spot, Charlie is able to maintain it -- which he has done for this stretch of games."

Shohei Ohtani Becomes First Japanese Player To Hit For Cycle

Jun 14, 2019 8:54 AM

Shohei Ohtani hit for the cycle Thursday night in the Los Angeles Angels' 5-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Ohtani became the first Japanese-born player to hit for the cycle in Major League Baseball.

"People were talking about it. It's not like a no-hitter when no one mentions it,'' Brad Ausmus said. "We forget how young he is. He's in a new country, his second year here. He's 24 years old. He carries a lot on his shoulders, but he still stands pretty tall.''

Ohtani is the seventh different Angels player to hit for the cycle and the first since Mike Trout in 2013.
