Encarnacion Matches AL Record With 16th HR

Sep 18, 2014 6:38 PM

Edwin Encarnacion hit two more home runs on Thursday night, giving him 16 in the month of May.

Encarnacion tied Mickey Mantle's American League record for May home runs. He is just one shy of Barry Bonds' Major League record (17).

He also matched a Major League record with his fifth multi-homer game in a month. Albert Belle did it in September 1995 and Harmon Killebrew in May 1959.

"I don't know where it goes down in history, but it's pretty historic in my mind," John Gibbons said.

Ervin Santana Wins Scoring Appeal

Oct 6, 2014 10:29 PM

Ervin Santana has won an appeal of an official scoring call that didn't lower his ERA, but gave B.J. Upton an error.

The ruling by Major League Baseball changed an RBI double by Matt Adams of the St. Louis Cardinals on May 16 to a sacrifice fly and an error.

Upton got a bad jump and got his glove on Adams' drive before dropping the ball in an Atlanta Braves' loss.

Revere Hits First ML HR In 1,466 ABs

Dec 8, 2014 8:49 PM

Ben Revere hit a home run for the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night, the first of his Major League career.

Revere had registered 1,466 career at-bats.

"Definitely good getting that monkey off your back," he said. "My game is mainly hit line drives and hit the ball on the ground. I get in a lot of trouble when I hit the ball in the air. We were hoping we would win the game, but it was a good feeling."

Revere's home run drought marked the longest stretch to start a big league career since Frank Taveras went 1,594 at-bats from 1972-77.

Sizemore 'Not Having Good At-Bats'

Nov 25, 2014 10:26 PM

Grady Sizemore is struggling at the plate in his first full season since 2011.

He is hitting .218/.293/.336 with two home runs as a member of the Boston Red Sox.

Sizemore has struggled to stay healthy in recent seasons, but an injury isn't the reason for his current issues.

"It's nothing to do with health," Sizemore said. "I'm just not having good at-bats and not swinging at good pitches. Just missing pitches is one of those things where I'm in a funk."

Cubs Snap Tanaka's 42-Game Winning Streak

Sep 16, 2014 6:01 PM

Masahiro Tanaka allowed a career-high four runs in six innings against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night, taking his first Major League loss.

Tanaka hadn't lost a regular season game in 42 starts, dating back to his time in Japan.

"I think I was able to get the streak going because I had support from my teammates," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "I'm a little bit disappointed because I think a lot of the fans were looking for me to keep on winning. Next time out, I'll try to get a win again and get it going again."

The Cubs defeated the Yankees 6-1 at Wrigley Field.
