With the New York Yankees seemingly out of the running, the Boston Red Sox are closing in on a trade to acquire the two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins. Early Tuesday morning, the Boston Globe reported that the Red Sox and Twins were exchanging medical information on Santana and Boston pitcher Jon Lester. Late Monday, a Red Sox source told the Star Tribune that the Twins asked for outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, Lester and shortstop Jed Lowry. The Red Sox have apparently been unwilling to include both Ellsbury and Lester for Santana. If and when a deal is consummated, the Twins would grant the acquiring club a 72-hour window to discuss a contract extension with Santana. The ace lefty is thought to be seeking at least $25 million a year.
