Los Angeles Angels' outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. will meet with officials from Major League Baseball Wednesday about a report that he ordered a shipment of human growth hormone, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The 33-year-old Matthews will speak with officials at the league's New York headquarters, the newspaper reported, citing a person inside baseball it didn't identify.
Matthews said he'd never taken HGH, 16 days after a February report in The Times Union of Albany, New York, that said he was a customer of an Internet pharmacy that is being investigated in connection with the illegal distribution of steroids and human growth hormone. HGH is a naturally occurring substance that is banned as a strength builder when added to the body.
Robert Shapiro, Matthews's attorney, didn't immediately return a voice-mail message left at his office seeking comment. Scott Leventhal, an agent for Matthews, didn't immediately return a voice-mail message.
